Monthly living costs in Auckland V1

Here are our weekly/monthly costs which will be useful for anyone trying to find out how much they’d need to earn in order to live in Auckland.

We live on the North Shore where rents are slightly lower but travelling time into the CBD is higher and impacts travelling costs.

Rent: $400 per week. In NZ rent is paid weekly, we haven’t found any that do it differently. This is for a nice 3 bedroomed home in a suburb with good schools. Budget for 3 weeks rent when you start a rental contract (2 weeks deposit/bond and 1 week paid in advance).

Water: $? This is paid every 6 months and we have not yet received a bill. Will update when we do.

Power: $300 per month (R1650 per month) There are a few different power companies here and you choose a provider and a package when you rent or buy a property.

Telephone & internet: $65 per week (R422 per week)

Childcare: $70 per day (R455 per day), $270 per week (R1755 per week), $1080 per month (R7020 per month). This is for 1 child, under 3 years old and includes meals. Ratio is 1 caregiver to 4 children.

Bus: $210 per month for an all zones bus pass (R1365 per month)

Petrol: $150 per week (R975 per week). This is based on 1 tank of petrol every 1.5 weeks.

Food, cleaning materials and toiletries: $190 per week (R1235 per week)

Car and home insurance (1 car valued at $8500): $72 per month (R468 per month)

Other costs: cellphone, parking, takeouts/entertainment

As for moving costs you also have to include a letting fee which is usually 1 weeks' rent plus GST along with your 3 / 4 week bond and one week rent in advance.

Your groceries are so cheap! We tried getting out with $250 a week, but it seems closer to $300 (and that is doing meal plans and sticking to our shopping list).

We also have life insurance which is $105 a month

Home insurance comes to $37.50 a fortnight for us

Our internet with broadband is $120 a month (but that is also for our telephone and we get 1 hour national calls free)

School fees for my older daughter is $135 a year with around $50 stationery and if we had to buy her school uniform from scratch probably in the region of $100 - $150

Daycare at EduKids in Albany is $52 per day - full day for over twos and under twos probably $54 or maybe $56 (can't remember). They participate in the 20 hours free for 3 and 4 year olds

I wouldn't say North Shore rent is cheaper than other places. I think you may have just caught it at a good time. We came around 5 years ago, and have to say that in some respects it is more expensive here than elsewhere.

Rent is usually weekly, unless you arrange with the landlord to make it fortnightly (you can do it this way and we've done it this way before).

If your car is older than 5 years you have to do a Warrant of Fitness twice a year, otherwise for newer cars it is once a year. That is around $45 - $50 each time (ours is due in October).
Licensing Fee is around $211 a year
You can't do your license unless you have renewed your WOF, but you can pay your license i.e. over 6 months or something.
And last year we had to buy 4 tyres so that came to around $600

And you might also want to add that most people get paid fortnightly, but there are some people who get paid monthly or even 4-weekly.

Have you converted your SA driver's licenses? You have to do this within a year of arriving otherwise you might have to do it all over again i.e. practical test, etc. We had to do a theory test, it cost around $80 at the time at the AA and was done within 30 minutes
